01 / Introduction What we teach

The internal
way of Wing Chun,
in North Sydney.

Located on Walker Street in North Sydney. A small group class on Tuesday evenings, with private one-on-one tuition by arrangement.

We are a small dedicated school. No gradings. No commercialisation. Just real Kung Fu, taught with the care, depth and patience the art demands. Beginners welcome.

You'll learn to use your body and mind to generate genuine power. Wing Chun is suitable for any body shape, for people young and old, because physical strength is not a requirement. What you build instead: a strong and balanced stance, fast and powerful strikes, and refined defensive technique.

02 / Approach Four principles
P/01

Internal
Power

The art does not rely on muscle. We train the alignment, intention and structure that allow the whole body to deliver force: Sigung Chu Shong Tin's signature method.

P/02

Sticking
Hands

Chi Sau is the laboratory of Wing Chun. Sensitivity replaces force; the moment your structure fails, your partner's hand is already through.

P/03

Centre
Line

Every movement returns to centre. The shortest distance between two points is also the most defensible, a principle that makes the system efficient and brutally direct.

P/04

Quiet
Mind

"Small idea" (the first form, Siu Nim Tau) quiets the body so technique can emerge. The internal art is, first, a practice of attention.

PHIL Warburton

Phil began training Wing Chun in 2003 and has trained full-time since 2004. A full-time professional teacher whose only goal is to see his students improve.

He is focused on transmitting the internal method: the art passed down from Yip Man through Sigung Chu Shong Tin. His Sifu is Mark Spence, a senior student of Chu Shong Tin with over forty years of training. Phil has logged over 16,000 hours of training and teaching, and has travelled to Hong Kong to train with Chu Shong Tin himself.

The difference between someone who trains twice a week for twenty years, and someone who trains twenty hours a week, is enormous. Phil is the latter.

Tom

Tom started training at Internal Kung Fu Australia in 2007. A student of Chinese Medicine, he has a deep interest in martial arts and a holistic approach to his teaching.

He has trained in Hong Kong with Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin, and is especially drawn to the internal power aspect of the system, the part of Wing Chun that has nothing to do with size or strength.

Having progressed through the school's teaching system, Tom now teaches alongside Phil. Patient, technical, and quietly precise.

I have been practicing Wing Chun Kung Fu at Internal Wing Chun Kung Fu North Sydney for over 6 months and have thoroughly enjoyed every one of the 25 lessons I have had. Phil the instructor is highly skilled in the martial art and is a fantastic communicator and trainer. In a relatively short time, I have learnt many practical skills that involve using my body and mind to achieve various defensive and attacking "moves" that deliver outcomes more superior than physical strength alone can deliver. I practice in a mixed group of 6–8 people, both male and female, younger and older. The classes are serious but we also have some fun. I would highly recommend Internal Wing Chun Kung Fu to anyone looking to take on a new challenge and learn a martial art.

I have been training with Phil since 2017. He is very knowledgeable in Wing Chun and a very good teacher.

I have been practising various martial arts for the past 25 years, primarily Krav Maga, Tae Kwon Do and Lao-Hu Kung Fu.

While these styles taught me valuable lessons, I always missed the calmness and structure that the internal arts have. With Wing Chun as Phil teaches it — as a structural internal art — I found what I had been missing: the perfect balance between direct offensiveness and the energy flow, body posture and structure of internal martial arts.

I have now been studying with Phil for over 2 years, and I feel like I have so much more to learn. This is a very deep art with many levels, and I highly appreciate Phil's understanding, continued learning and his teaching style.

At first I was cautious about learning Kung Fu. I wasn't specifically interested in self-defence, but I wanted to improve myself, and Kung Fu sounded appealing. The first month brought a lot of new information, but after a few months everything started to make sense — and I'm glad I made that initial effort.

I have studied Wing Chun with Phil for almost two years and I'm constantly amazed at the subtle intricacies of this art. It offers an almost meditative way of increasing awareness of your body movements, and that awareness lets you generate incredible force. Wing Chun doesn't require you to be strong or fit — it requires a certain thoughtfulness, and if you give it that thought it offers a martial art that is both useful and enjoyable.

Phil is an excellent teacher. He takes time with each student, teaches in a professional and dedicated way, and keeps the class informal and friendly. I cannot recommend this class enough — it is an absolute pleasure to study.

After beginning my martial arts with Qi Gong and Tai Chi, I found myself training at Sifu Phil Warburton's school in North Sydney — and decided I would make Wing Chun Kung Fu a lifelong passion.

Incredible defence, so effective it can defend and attack in one move in close combat, yet simple and easy to learn. Wing Chun has changed my lifestyle — I feel much more confident, and I'm really into the philosophy of this martial art.

"
Wing Chun is an amazing way of moving; the power generated is unique — drawn purely from body awareness and an in-depth understanding of how the body moves with alignment of structure and joints.

The concept at first was hard to grasp — developing power without using any muscle. That intrigued me the most, and the more I trained the better understanding I gained.

I've trained this style for 6 years. I went to Hong Kong with Phil to train with Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin, and met the people who trained with him over many years. The whole experience was amazing and gave me even more appreciation for the art.

Phil has trained me for 6 years. He has a great understanding of Wing Chun but, even more importantly, he teaches in a way that gives you real confidence in this unique style — relaxed, patient, and always making time for the individual.

07 / Questions Before you begin
Q1What is Wing Chun?

Wing Chun is a southern Chinese martial art (a system, not just a style) designed so that a smaller, weaker person can prevail through structure, sensitivity and timing rather than size or strength. It is built on the centreline, sticking hands (Chi Sau) and three empty-hand forms: Siu Nim Tau, Chum Kiu and Biu Jee. Read more about Wing Chun →
